Well the shortest month of the year has come and gone…

At least this was the lucky year we had a leap day.  Does anyone else think that should be a public holiday?  I mean c’mon, February 29th only happens once every four years, and I spent the majority of it inside an office.  I don’t know why, I just feel like it should be considered a bit more special, haha.

BUT anyways, it’s honestly crazy how fast time goes when you are working full-time– especially when you are scheduled the night shift.  I’ve caught myself in the motion of life, just working 40 hour work weeks, and enjoying my weekends off.  I’ve had a couple crazy weekends, and couple weekends where I did absolutely nothing — which I think I really needed.  February definitely had its ups and downs.

So let’s talk about a few of the highlights of the past month.

Contract Extension

So the job I’m working at right now in Sydney was originally supposed to be a 3-month casual contract.  They told us that as the beginning that there was a possibility of extending it.  They ended up telling us we definitely were extending until the end of January.

Then at the beginning of February– the company said they would be extending us on a week-by-week basis. WTF?

That wasn’t the news I was hoping for.  I understand we are casual employees on a temporary contract, but only giving us a week’s notice for an extension didn’t seem too fair.

WELL — Fortunately they must have been feeling the same way, because mid-February they extended us another 7 weeks to April 1st.

This gave me a lot of peace of mind.  I really like my job.  It’s an easy commute, decent money, and allows me to work on my travel blog when it’s not busy.  (Yes, I’m writing this at the office).

They would actually probably extend my contract even longer — but I’m coming up on the 6-month mark, and on the Working Holiday Visa, you can only work for one employee for 6 months.  : (

My Birthday

Yeah, February is my birthday month.  I’m not quite sure how I feel about turning 27…even writing it makes me feel old.  YES, I know I’m not “that old”, but I’m definitely a bit strange about getting so close to 30.  I’m still figuring out my life (aren’t we all…?), and it’s made me realize that I need to get some of my shit together.

So what did I do for my birthday…?

My friends cruised down to my place in Randwick for an old fashioned house party / pre-game.  Beer pong, electronic music, and amazing people.  We cruised down to Bondi Beach for some free club event, but it ended at 1 A.M and had a pretty early night.

The following day my friends threw me a nice little B-day BBQ down at the beach.  Solid day with heaps of delicious food, soccer, beers, and afternoon swimming.

Overall, an amazing weekend with the Sydney squad.

Highlight — receiving a 1 KG tub of Hummus as a birthday present.  Thanks Rosiey!!  : )

Yacht Social Club

This was hands down one of the best days I’ve had in Sydney.  It was a last minute decision, and it was worth every penny!

Website Re-Design

For those of you who haven’t noticed, Jones Around The World looks completely different now.  I was really unhappy with my old website, and I think I finally got it looking decent!  It looks 10x better on the mobile / tablet platform, and is much more aesthetically pleasing.

What’s Coming Up Next…?

Well, a few things have changed in the past month.  I’ve been really keen to stay in Australia for an indefinite amount of time, but now it’s not really looking like that’s going to happen (long story).

All I know is that I’m continuing to work my ass of saving up as much money as possible here in Australia.

My contract ends at the end of this month, so I’ll just be continuing these 40 hour work weeks before I begin to look for a new job.

I’m going to Return to Rio which is going to be insane!  I’ve been desperate for a 3-day festival, and it’s finally coming.

Happy Belated Birthday, fellow Feb b-day guy! Hear you on the extension bit, at least from my old temp job. I’d get notification like a few days or week before sometimes. 1 reason why I transitioned from my old to new life. Keep on enjoying life Jones!

Ahh Cheers Ryan! YEah, the job extension was pretty nice to hear for almost 2 months in advance. Now the only question is what I’m going to be doing next. I’m looking forward to do some traveling, or maybe settling down and finding a sponsorship here. Hope all is well in paradise : )

Thanks Austin! Yeah, The YSC was an absolute blast. Easily one of my favorite events I’ve went to in Sydney! March has been a great month as well, but looking forwards to April :-)
