Since 1994, Sónar Music Festival has continually positioned itself at the forefront of an ever-expanding field of international electronic music fests. From June 15-17, the event returns to Barcelona for its 24th year with an absolutely massive lineup of international DJs and live acts, as well as a series of cutting-edge conferences geared technology and creativity. The techno-heavy festival has grown in size and strength each year, and continues to provide attendees with a truly unique musical experience. Check out a few reasons why you can’t miss Sónar 2017 below.

Since its inception, Sónar has proven to be nothing short of impressive in terms of programming and production. This year is no exception, featuring live shows and DJ sets by some of the biggest names in international music. Heavy hitters on the 2017 bill include Anderson.Paak, Nina Kraviz, Eric Prydz, Justice, Seth Troxler, De La Soul, Dubfire, Masters At Work, Damian Lazarus, Floorplan, Moderat, Soulwax, The Black Madonna, Derrick Carter, and many, many more. Resident Advisor also returns this year to host SonarLab, and outdoor event during Sonar By Night, with the likes of Marcel Dettmann, Carl Craig, and others.
From daytime disco to booming bass lines, immersive audiovisual experiences to sunrise sets, the lineup alone should be reason enough to book your flight to Barcelona. Check out the complete lineup HERE.

Creativity and the avant-garde are ubiquitous at Sonar, and the logistics and physical spaces of the festival are no exception. The various stages, both indoor and outdoor, each offer a deeply engaging experience accompanied by the best audio and visual production and effects. What else would you expect from one of the world’s best electronic festivals?

By day, you can explore the Fira Montjuïc and wander through the SónarVillage, SónarComplex, SónarHall, and SónarDome to catch music, technology conferences, and more. By night, SónarClub, SónarLab, SónarCar (boasting a 360º sound system), and SónarPub at the Fira Gran Via de l’Hospitalet offer immersive musical experiences in unique environments. There are even food trucks and bumper cars!

Sonar exists in two formats: Sónar By Day (located inside Barcelona at the Fira Montjuic) and Sónar By Night (located just outside the city at the larger Fira Gran Via de l’Hospitalet). Sónar By Day features some great international talent, as well as exciting up-and-comers showcased at SónarDome by Red Bull Music Academy (now in its 13th year of partnering with the festival to showcase emerging artists). You might just see the next big name in electronic music at the daytime events.
Integrated into the daytime programming at the Fira Montjuic is Sónar+D, a multidisciplinary cultural event bringing together an impressive number of accredited industry professionals, companies, artists, and keynote speakers with the purpose of advancing the relationship between creativity and technology.  Coinciding with the week prior to, and weekend of Sónar itself, Barcelona’s top underground music venues play host to some of the world’s biggest names in techno and house. Called “Off Sónar” or “Off Parties,” these events showcase DJs you’d see at Ibiza residencies, some of the planet’s top labels, and an exciting array of promoters from Europe and beyond.
Sónar is, at its core, a city festival. As opposed to having a rural destination or remote field as home base, the events are integrated within the social framework of Barcelona itself. The official festival is the reason to make the journey, and the Off Parties located around the city are a fantastic way to supplement your overall experience.

As Barcelona is a city that never truly sleeps, it wouldn’t be particularly fair to say that it comes alive during Sonar. Rather, Barcelona is absolutely vibrating during the festival dates. There’s something simply magical about the sun-soaked Catalan capital.

During the summer, although teeming with tourists, there is a literal endless list of activities all over this Mediterranean metropolis to occupy and entertain people from all walks of life. Spend a day wandering the medieval streets of the Gothic Quarter, visit some of Europe’s best museums and galleries, or simply find a sunny spot to enjoy some tapas and sangria. Between the expansive beach, the city’s winding streets and wide avenues, and the multitude of parks and green spaces, you’re sure to find a suitable place.
